Swimming in Complex Fluids

چکیده
We review the literature on swimming in complex fluids. A classification is proposed by comparing length and time scales of a swimmer with those nearby obstacles, interpreted broadly, extending from rigid or soft confining boundaries to molecules which confer bulk fluid stresses. third dimension concentration swimmers, incorporates fluids whose complexity arises purely collective motion organisms. For each eight system classes we identify provide background describe modern research findings. While some have seen great deal attention for decades, others remain uncharted waters still open awaiting exploration.

Microelastohydrodynamics of Swimming Organisms near Solid Boundaries in Complex Fluids
Microorganisms such as sperm routinely swim close to solid boundaries and within nonNewtonian fluids. In this paper, we exploit the lubrication approximation to model the motion of a flexible sheet near a rigid wall and immersed in a complex fluid. This allows us to specify an internally generated force density on the sheet and allow its shape and velocity to be determined by the interplay betw...
متن کاملPhase-separation models for swimming enhancement in complex fluids.
Swimming cells often have to self-propel through fluids displaying non-Newtonian rheology. While past theoretical work seems to indicate that stresses arising from complex fluids should systematically hinder low-Reynolds number locomotion, experimental observations suggest that locomotion enhancement is possible. In this paper we propose a physical mechanism for locomotion enhancement of micros...

The effects of fluid elasticity on the swimming behavior of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans are experimentally investigated by tracking the nematode's motion and measuring the corresponding velocity fields. We find that fluid elasticity hinders self-propulsion. Compared to Newtonian solutions, fluid elasticity leads to up to 35% slower propulsion. Furthermore, self-propulsion decreases as e...
متن کاملUndulatory swimming in non-Newtonian fluids
We numerically investigate the effects of non-Newtonian fluid properties, including shear thinning and elasticity, on the locomotion of Taylor’s swimming sheet with arbitrary amplitude. Our results show that elasticity hinders the swimming speed, but a shear-thinning viscosity in the absence of elasticity enhances the speed. The combination of the two effects, modelled using a Giesekus constitu...

of a dissertation by Ewelina Kalwarczyk A modern, twenty-first-century chemistry, not only continues the research conducted in previous centuries, but also brings together various branches of science and technology. The goal of this approach is usually to create new materials characterized by an interesting combination of physicochemical properties. In my studies, I followed this trend and appl...
